Switch Off Your Mind, Switch On Your Consciousness

Do you know what separates a mindful person from an ordinary person?

It’s how they use their mind.

When you use your mind to do every little thing in your day, it’s your mind that makes the choices for you.

And no matter how hard you think before you make these choices, there is no guarantee that it will give you peace and happiness ahead in life.

To see if this is true or not you can observe your own life.

Do you remember any such event in your life when you thought you made the best decision at that time, but now when you look back at it, you wish you had made a different choice.

Chances are there is more than one thing you wish you had done in a different way.

And you are not alone in that. I too wish the same for myself.

Though what’s done can’t be undone now, what we can do is make sure that we do the right things today so that we don’t regret them in the future.

Now, how do we do that?

The answer is to switch off your mind and switch on your consciousness.

Your mind is nothing but a formation of what it sees, hears, and feels. It stores and processes whatever the senses in your body send to it. And based on all these, your mind forms patterns and networks in your brain, which it then uses to make every little decision in your life.

But your consciousness isn’t like that in any way.

Your consciousness isn’t influenced by your senses and what you see or hear or feel. It existed before them and it’ll exist after them. And this is what makes it capable to make decisions that are not bound by time or space.

So the choices that you make, when your consciousness guides you, are timeless and universal in nature. They were true yesterday, they are true today, and they’ll remain true tomorrow no matter what happens to this world.

Between our mind and consciousness, consciousness wins over mind every single time.

After you know this, it looks so logical and right to shift from using your mind to using your consciousness to guide you in making the right choices in life.

But this is where it gets tricky.

We are so used to using our mind to do every little thing in our day, and we have rarely, if ever, used our consciousness to seek answers to our questions. And that’s why it’s unlikely that you will connect with your consciousness and become a mindful person instantly.

For that to happen, you need to go through a process which involves relying less and less on your mind, and more and more on your consciousness.

The true mindful person can switch off his or her mind as and when they want it, and switch to their consciousness whenever they need it. That’s what you, too, should aspire to achieve in your life.

For a start, as you live this day today, see if you can shut off your mind for a while and remain in a complete state of no-thought at least for a few minutes.

If you practice meditation every day, this should be doable to at least some extent. If you can’t do that, then it only means you have a long way to go, and it’s time for you to take your meditation practice more seriously.

You see, the moment your mind isn’t thinking of any thoughts is also the moment when your consciousness starts to reveal itself to you.

At first, your consciousness acts just like a shy person who is afraid to go out and speak in public. But when you keep pushing it more and more your consciousness starts to gain confidence and starts to come out in the open more and more often.

By regularly practicing mindfulness and meditation, you give it the courage to come out and reveal itself fully. And that’s when you start to see the beauty of your consciousness.

That’s when you see how wrongly your mind has conditioned you to act in ways that only bring your unhappiness and suffering, and how right your consciousness is in guiding you what to do in each moment in your life.

So starting today, try to break free from the limitations and illusions of your mind. Try to switch it off whenever you can afford to during your day. And instead, try to switch on your consciousness and connect with it as often as you can.

Once you do that, then your life can only get more beautiful, more peaceful and more meaningful than what it is now.

And isn’t that what every one of us ultimately wants?
