The Right Thing To Do at Each Moment

Is it possible for any human to be right all the time? What do you think?

Perhaps you are right.

Because if you could be right all the time, then you’ll already be perfect and won’t need to know anything else in life, and most likely won’t be reading this.

But do you know that Buddha was often referred to as the perfect one by many people. After reading and following his teachings for several years, I feel the same about him.

And just like Buddha, by practicing meditation and mindfulness for several years, we too can gain the right understanding about life. And then it becomes easier to do the right thing all the time.

But, say, you’re new to practicing mindfulness. How are you supposed to make the right decisions when you don’t have any experience practicing mindfulness?

Here’s a tip: Try to be as mindful of the present moment as you possibly can, and try to do the right thing at each moment.

Whenever you’re faced with choices that require you to take a decision, choose one which seems the most right at that moment of time. And when you do so, make sure that you separate your ego from your decision, and do the right thing irrespective of its outcome for you.

The decisions which you make based only on the present moment are more authentic and are in more sync with your inner self. If you let too much of your past experience or future expectations meddle with your decision, then you lose this inner touch and your authentic self.

Simply witness the present moment, and make the best decision you can at that moment. To do that, separate yourself from the past and future.

Instead of thinking about your past moment – which is already dead and won’t ever come back no matter what you do – you can make sure that you live your present moment in such a way that, when this present moment passes and becomes a past moment you don’t regret it at all.

And instead of thinking about a future moment, you should strive to live in the present moment, and tell yourself that you’ll handle the future moment as and when it comes. Then there won’t be any future moment at all, but only the present moment which you will live later.

This approach to life, where you try to do the right thing at every moment, soon transforms you into a person who automatically starts doing the right thing in every situation.

And with this comes the right understanding towards life. Once you have this right understanding, you start to discover your path in life. And once you discover your path in life, the only thing that remains is for you to walk on it.
