Having just read a book on simple living, it’s a good time to see how to make the best use of your time and energy once your life becomes simple.
There are several benefits of living a simple life, and you can find the whole web filled with so many articles and books about them.
But there is one thing I don’t see anyone writing about, and that is how living a simple life can help you to become more mindful, more peaceful, and dive deeper in your meditation practice.
So today, let’s try to cover this in detail.
For many people, simple living is a goal, and as soon as their lives become simpler than before, they feel that they have reached their goal.
While there is nothing wrong with aiming to live a simple life, the problem comes when you become too much attached to even this simple way of living, and stop growing beyond that.
I hope, if you are reading this, that you are not one of them. I want you to go beyond that. I want you to have deeper peace and happiness than what comes from just living a simple life.
Living a simple life should help you to find your purpose in life. And your purpose in life should not be to just live a simple life.
At its most basic level, here’s how a simple life helps you :
- It makes you stress-free, peaceful, and happy.
- It makes you appreciate the little things in life.
- It helps you see the beauty of Nature around you.
- It makes you remove attachment from most material objects in your life.
- It helps you find more time for your family and friends.
- It also helps you find more time for yourself.
Now, the above reasons are tempting enough for anyone to strive after living a simple life.
But once you reach these goals, you should strive further so that you can gain even more.
So, here’s how you can take a simple living lifestyle to higher levels.
1) Seek Permanent Peace and Happiness
While living a simple life already makes you happy and peaceful, it won’t last forever. As soon as outer circumstances change, and your life becomes complicated, you will become unhappy and stressed-out again.
There are lot of things in your life that lie beyond your control. And at times those things may prevent you from living a simple life. That’s why it’s not the best option to rely on simplicity in life for your happiness.
The best way to have permanent peace and happiness in life is to not rely on even whether your life is simple or complicated. Once you start to think this way, you will realize that you can remain at peace with yourself even when your simple life is getting destroyed from outer conditions.
For example, you won’t feel angry even when your partner buys a lot of material stuff for your home. You won’t feel angry even when your son listens to loud music at home. You won’t be unhappy even when you have to stay busy all day taking care of others.
And then you will understand this simple truth that it’s possible to have permanent peace and happiness in life irrespective of how simple or complicated your life is. There are two tools that will help you to gain this permanent peace and happiness, and they are mindfulness and meditation.
2) Give More Time to Meditation
Once your life becomes simple, and you gain some extra time for yourself, then what better way to make use of it than to spend it in practicing meditation.
Because it’s only by meditating that you realize that you still have a long way to go to find full inner peace. When you meditate, a lot of thoughts may come to your mind which indicate that you still lack total peace from inside.
This should make you meditate more and more, so that you can reduce the number of thoughts you get in your mind. And then meditate even more, so that, finally, you can see every single thought as it comes, as it stays in your mind, and as it leaves your mind.
This gives you the power to choose or discard the thoughts in your mind, and helps you to encourage only those thoughts that will benefit you and every other being in this planet.
3) Practice Mindfulness Often
The reason you strive after living a simple life is because you are already mindful of the chaos around you to some extent. This is a good sign.
But you can always try to become even more mindful than that so that you can gain more understanding about the nature of your mind itself.
Don’t limit your mindfulness to only what’s going outside and around you. Try to become mindful of your body and mind itself. This way of practicing mindfulness will help you realize the things that you have made a part of your simple life, but which you don’t need at all in your life.
For example, you may have simplified your life by reducing the number of social media sites you use or the number of gadgets you own, from ten to just one or two. But by being fully mindful of your mind itself you will see that you can further simplify your life by having no social media accounts at all, or by just having a single gadget in your life.
Mindfulness helps you clearly see what an action or a behavior does to your mind. Your mindfulness helps you see the impact any action causes inside you. So once you see that consuming something or having something only causes you stress and makes you distracted, then you can let that thing go completely from your life.
4) Remove All Your Attachments
The final goal of living a simple life should be to become unattached to every thing in your life. That means, if you want to end your quest for peaceful life and actually become fully peaceful, then you will have to stop relying on every thing that’s not in your control.
By giving up all attachments in life, you learn to see what’s really important to you and what’s not at all important to you in your life.
Once your mind is free of any attachments, it begins to see the truth for what it is. Because the truth about your life can only be realized with a pure mind which has zero attachments left in it.
An impure mind is just not capable enough to see the truth. So removing your attachments will help you come closer to the truth about who you are, and what you are supposed to do with your life.
Discover What Lies Beyond Simple Living…
A simple life should assist you in finding your core purpose in life. It should help you separate the truth from the false, the right from the wrong, the useful from the useless.
Otherwise, what’s the use of living a simple life, if you still become unhappy from time to time; if you still lose your peace of mind from time to time; if you still get strayed away from the truth from time to time.
So first, if your life isn’t simple, then make it simple. And then, once your life becomes simple, move beyond that, and use it to discover ultimate peace, ultimate happiness, and your ultimate purpose in life.
Thank you for your time.
