How to Break Free from the Strong Pull of Your Desires

What makes us crave towards our desires?

Why don’t our desires ever end?

Is there anything that we can do to put an end, once and for all, to these desires?

Is there anything that can make us so strong from within that any form of desire, whether internal or external, ceases to have any effect on us?

To find answers to all such questions, first, let’s start by getting to know everything we can about our desires.

Our desires are very strong in nature. They wouldn’t have been so strong if only we had learned to practice mindfulness and meditation since we were kids.

But since we knew nothing better then, and we grew up chasing our desires and forming one desire after another throughout our life, our desires continued to grow strong, one by one, and now they have come to define who we are, what we stand for, and what we will do in our life tomorrow.

When left uncontrolled, our desires become the very cause of all our unhappiness and suffering. They lead us from one pain to another, and then another, and continue to do so till the end of our life.

To break free from the strong pull of your desires, the first step you have to take is to identify the nature of your desires – Why they arise? Where do they come from? What happens after you fulfill them?

Understanding the very nature of your desires is a good start. Meditate deeply on it. Think of it whenever you get any free time.

Apart from meditating, try to be mindful of your desires all the time. Whenever any desire comes to your mind, be prepared to deal with it. Be on your guard all the time.

Let me ask you, have you ever tried to identify those first waves of desire that hit you every day at morning?

You haven’t!

Then, let’s start with that.

Every morning, after you wake up, when you decide to get up from bed; that’s desire. When you pickup your brush to brush your teeth; that’s desire. When you go to your bathroom to take a shower; that’s desire. When you move towards your kitchen; that’s desire. When you make your breakfast; that’s desire.

That’s just some of the desires that you have in your mind when you get up. If you count all the desires that arise within you in a typical day, you’ll see for yourself how much power they have over you.

But why am I telling you all this? Doesn’t all this sound too obvious, or irrelevant?

Well, the point I want to make is that you can’t live your life without desires. You can’t live a single day without desires. You can’t even do anything in the next moment without desire.

But still, I want you to understand the nature of your desires. Because it’s only when you understand the nature of your desires, do you learn how to break free from them. It’s only then that you learn to figure out a way to move out of the field of your desires, learn to live without them, and eventually become stronger than them.

So, the first step to win over your desires is to identify and understand your desires. What’s the second step?

It’s to start practicing living with awareness (which you can also call mindfulness) and continue to remove your desires, one by one.

When you start to live with awareness and try to end all forms of desires within you, here’s what happens : You see that there is something more to you beyond your desires. You see there is something in you that makes you aware of itself. This awareness is not your mind, it’s not your feelings, it’s something that you aren’t used to identifying with yourself.

Understanding all about this awareness should be your next step.

As you dig deeper into this awareness, you see that it helps you become more and more mindful of everything within you. It helps you become aware of your thoughts, your feelings, and all the sensations in your body.

You begin to realize that this is something beautiful. Even if you don’t know exactly what it is, you know that this state is a very pleasant and peaceful state to be in. And that the happiness that comes from this peace lasts for longer time than the happiness you get from fulfilling your desires.

This gives you new realization on what you need to work on next – your desires or your awareness?

It’s this awareness that will help you further to break free from the strong pull of your desires. It’s this awareness that will help you to discover your real nature and how you are supposed to live your life.

It’s this awareness that will help you to make the right choices in every moment in your life. It’s this awareness that will help to guide you in your way ahead in life. It’s this awareness that will kill all your desires, one by one.

The more and more aware you become of your awareness, the more and more the desires will keep abandoning you. With total awareness also comes the total end of desires.

This is a long process, not one that lasts days or weeks, but one that lasts for years or even decades. But your individual rate can differ based on the thoughts in your mind and how you have lived your life so far. So worrying about how soon or late you can do that is of no consequence now.

What is of consequence is the will to understand the nature of your desires, the will to learn more about your awareness, the will to meditate every day and gain self-knowledge.

And what is even more effective than your will is to take the action to do all the above in your daily life.

Become aware of yourself as you get up at morning. Become aware of yourself as you take the first steps of your day. Become aware of yourself as you sit down to eat.

Become aware of yourself as you read this post.

Become aware of yourself as you close this post.

What is it that’s happening right now? What is it that should mean the most to you at this moment, but actually doesn’t?

Keep working on such thoughts. They will help you to become more aware of yourself. And they will help you to win over your desires in the long run.

That’s all I have to say for today.

Thank you for your time.
