I often talk to you about living a meditative life, and even the core purpose of this blog revolves around meditation.
So today, I want to share with you what meditation really means.
If you are new to meditation, you may already know its basic benefits. For example, you may know it’s a good way to release stress, or a good way to relax, or a good way to bring yourself back to the present moment.
While all that’s true, such benefits only reveal the surface of meditation. If you think that’s what meditation is all about, you’ll miss the true essence of meditation and with that you’ll lose a great opportunity to discover your true self.
Meditation is way more than what most people know about it. And I don’t want you to be among those who only look at it in a casual way. I want you to know the true power of meditation, so that you can use it to gain the right understanding in your life and live more in sync with your inner self than you do now.
You can look at meditation in several ways. Whichever way you look at it its true essence remains the same.
Meditation is the journey within the self to understand the real self. It’s the process to filter out the unwanted thoughts and feelings from your body and mind, so that you can discover the important self that exists without them.
You can also say that meditation is the process to remove the unimportant, so that you can identify what’s important within you.
Meditation is to get rid of the temporary pleasures, so that you can find permanent happiness within yourself.
Meditation is giving up what’s outside to discover what’s within.
Meditation is sacrificing the negative aspects of your life such as anger, jealousy, hate, fear, desire, greed, treachery, and chaos, and embracing positive aspects in your life such as calmness, gratefulness, love, fearlessness, selflessness, kindness, honesty, compassion, forgiveness, and peace.
Meditation helps you move from illusion to reality, from the self-centered egoic self to the all-caring egoless self.
Meditation unites you with everything else in the universe. And at the same time, it also helps you to identify your place in this universe.
Meditation makes you independent and helps you become your own teacher.
With enough practice in meditation, you’ll start to learn things about yourself that you didn’t know before. You’ll see your mind, body, and desires more clearly than you saw before.
To practice meditation you don’t have to follow any specific group or cult. Meditation is for everyone. You can practice it anywhere you want, any time you want, and for as much time as you want. There are no restrictions.
Also, there are as many ways to meditate as there are different teachers who teach it. It’ll take you time to figure out what way of meditation works best for you. The only thing you can do till then is to keep learning, keep practicing, and try to discover for yourself what meditation technique works best for you.
Meditation is a vast topic and there is no way I can write all about it in a single article. But you don’t have to worry about that, as I will continue to share with you each week all that I know about meditation.
For now, you only need to know that meditation can help you live a better and more meaningful life than what you live now. Start with that, and you’ll find the way ahead on your own.
Once you understand what meditation is, you will wonder what kept you waiting so long to practice it.
