Give it a Day

Many times you fall prey to your desires and feelings, and you act upon them and do things, only to regret them the next day.

You buy an expensive phone today, only to find tomorrow that you didn’t need it as much as you thought you did. Or, you pick up a fight with your friend, only to find the next day that it wasn’t worth fighting for such a small issue.

Such things happen to you again and again. Do you know why?

The reason you do such mistakes is because you act on impulse. And a good way to avoid such situations in future is to not to act at all, and take a break and come back to face your problem the next day.

When you act on impulse, you let your desires and feelings take control over yourself for a few moments. You aren’t aware of your actions and their consequences.

What you need then is a break from that situation, so that you can have a fresh look at it later and make the right decision which is the best one for you.

When you give yourself a break for a day, your desires and feelings lose their grip over you. And when you wake up the next day, after a good night’s sleep, you don’t feel you want to do something as badly as you did a day before.

When you find yourself in such situation where your impulse seems to take control over you, take a deep breath, let it go, and say to yourself that you will think and act on the problem tomorrow.

You can apply this in many situations.

When you see the ad for the latest smartphone, you may want to instantly order it online. But instead of doing that, take a deep breath, and say to yourself that you’ll think about it tomorrow and only then make a decision. And the next day, you’ll see that you don’t feel as excited to buy it as you felt a day before.

Or, when someone hurts your feelings, you may immediately want to swear at them. But instead of doing that, take a deep breath, and say to yourself that you will tell them what you feel tomorrow. And the next day, you’ll find that you don’t feel as angry as you felt a day before, and you may even let the matter go.

The same way, you can take a break for a day from every situation in your life where you find yourself acting on impulse and not on careful thought.

So the next time you want to do something badly, give it a day, come back to it tomorrow, and see if you need to do it at all

This has worked well for me many times. Try it and see if it works for you too.
